I pretty much spend my whole life in stories.
Once I’m ready for work in the morning, I write. At work, I spend my day turning facts into stories–into something that has meaning. On my commute I read books. I come home and watch TV, read comics, view movies, peruse magazines.
Stories is pretty much what I do. Call it an addiction if you like.
But then, if you ask me, stories are at the heart of just about everything. People are made for stories.
Stories connect. Stories build. Stories let us explore new places, take us on wild adventures, show us the impossible. It’s so innate to us, it’s how we dream.
They foster wonder, grow imagination, transcend cultures and bring out our humanness.
Stories are how ideas travel.
And that’s where the real power of story is, in what they plant in us. The Lorax, A Wrinkle in Time, Jane Eyre, Martian Chronicles–these aren’t just books I’ve read. These are ideas, loaded and rich, that I have consumed and made my own. They have shaped who I have become.
That’s the real power of story–to plant something new in our minds and grow there.
Tell me … what stories have shaped you?
